Unchoreographed Spontaneity

Upon leaving Balconi Coffee Company in Little Japantown in Sawtelle, I hear an angry motorist laying down on their SUV's horn like it was a klaxon warning villagers to get to higher ground, there's a tsunami bearing down on their coastline.

Getting closer to the major intersection I can see it's a male Caucasian and he's not stopping, inching up even further behind his target, a young Asian woman who's eyes can be seen fearfully looking into her rear view mirror, obviously scared.

I quickened my step and when was parallel to him, stepped out into the street getting his attention. I made a 360° circling motion with my finger and yelled out, "look at all these people looking at you like you're an asshole" He did not lay down on the horn again.

I bypassed my chance at the crossing to await him and his SUV's turn to see if he got aggressive as he passed her, and maybe I wanted to see if he made any kind of eye contact with me, which he didn't.

There were hundreds of people being drawn towards his commotion, looking at him and the poor woman. Not helping issues of race, color or creed this man hopefully unknowingly caused.

At the crossroads of three intersections they approached me, totalling at least fifty, many without saying a word but the slight bow of the head from Japanese out of respect followed by a smile, aged child to senior.

That's how you can earn a bit of respect amongst a community, an uncoreographed moment of spontaneity, determinate upon your actions.

Every once in a while you can get lucky like that.
